Security Camera – Weatherproofing your Camera Buying Tips
by: Owen Walcher
There are several things to consider when buying a security camera. Weatherproof casing is one consideration and installation is another. Keep in mind that when it comes to a security camera, weatherproof isn’t the same thing as waterproof.
Security Camera – Weatherproof vs. Waterproof
When a security camera is weatherproof, it means that it can continue to function in the midst of rain, snow, sleet, etc.
Waterproof cameras, on the other hand, should be able to withstand being submerged in water. A security camera weatherproof casing isn’t really built to allow underwater operation.
Some online suppliers may use weatherproof and waterproof interchangeably, so make sure you know what you’re buying (Hint: A submersible camera will indicate the maximum depth at which it can continue to function, say 100 M.).
Weatherproof cameras generally cost less than underwater cameras. But if you intend to operate your security camera in extreme weather conditions (e.g., in the midst of heavy rains, unprotected by eaves or a roofline), a waterproof security camera is your best bet.
Security Camera – Weatherproof Bullet Casing
Security camera weatherproof bullet casing gets its name from its cylindrical housing. Bullet security cameras typically come with fixed focus lenses and are very affordable.
They’re small and you can put them almost anywhere. Despite their low profile, they are still visible enough to serve as deterrents to would-be intruders. Waterproof models are available as well.
Security Camera – Weatherproof – Black & White or Color?
Choose a black & white security camera for nighttime viewing or low light conditions, where you simply want to be alerted about an intruder. Go for a color unit if you think it’s more important to get clear facial feature and clothing identification during daytime.
Another option is a day/night security camera that adjusts automatically from day into night viewing. These units are great for dimly lit portions of your property, such as the side of your house or your driveway.
Security Camera – Weatherproof – Other Considerations
Given the recent technological advancements in home security products, the prices of weatherproof security cameras have gone down. So you’ll probably be able to find a unit to suit your budget. A good price for a weatherproof security camera is $120 (or less if you can fine one on sale).
Choose a camera with a protective, adjustable sunshield to guard against glare. Check for multiple mounting features if you intend to mount your security camera beneath eaves or somewhere tricky.
Confused about which resolution to choose. An average resolution is something like 420 Lines/0.05 Lux. So choose that or ask for a product demonstration.
